The MCSE Qualification

By Scott Edwards

You'll quickly come to realise that courses for the MCSE qualification vary hugely, from the excellent to the impossible to complete unless you're Bill Gates! Information overload and pushy sales people trying to pay a mortgage will blur the edges telling you how much better their company is. To make it nice and simple remember there are only two areas you need to be sure of: What is the quality and content of the course like, and can I talk to a professional who can help me when I get stuck, during the times I will be studying ie. evenings and weekends. Hopefully, the following will get you on the right track.

Distance learning offers two routes; predominantly home-based training with books, manuals and the odd CD, along with frequent trips throughout the course to a college for classroom training. The second is CD and DVD ROM based training - much cheaper, but varies in quality from clunky to excellent. The colleges have huge overheads so are very expensive, which leans us towards the disc-based training.

Interactive disc based training is more convenient for you the student. College course students not only need to travel, they'll also pay accomodation costs and have to book time off work for their MCSE qualification classroom sessions.

With quality training on discs, the process of learning is from full-motion videos of instructors teaching and demonstrating. It's very user friendly and available whenever you want it. But where this type of training really takes off is in the cutting-edge interactive labs. Here you can gain a 'hands-on' learning experience - a good package will enable you to interact with software without it being loaded onto your PC.

Avoid those dull 'grey' corporations that just exist to sell you stuff, and find a company whose sole aim is to give good advice and value for money. You should expect to be advised on the right way forward for you, asked questions about your personality, and your likes and dislikes in the working environment.

Your goal should be to find the right job for you - one you can actually look forward to doing on Monday mornings. Once that bit's sorted, finding the right course, with the qualifications employers are looking for will be straight forward with the right advice.

If you've started to look, you'll know that in the IT training industry getting decent support outside of office hours seems almost impossible to find. Most claim they do offer 24/7, but at best you're given the ability to leave a message and be called back in the next day or so within office hours!

The cutting edge companies offer access to help from around the world in different time zones, so they're always open to assist you. This is the only sort of support you can really rely on to be there for you when working on your MCSE qualification -literally anytime of day or night.
